Great BearThere was a time when Hersheypark in Hershey, PA wasn’t exactly a prime spot for coaster lovers. Actually, they really didn’t have crap at one point. It wasn’t that long ago, really! 1996 brought the first of many roller coaster additions to Hershey with Wildcat, a knot of wooden track designed by GCI. Prior to that, Sidewinder, a Vekoma Boomerang built in 1991 was their newest coaster…prior to that, their newest was Sooperdooperlooper, built in 1977. However, since 1996, coasters have been added every few years with 1998’s Great Bear being the next major addition.

Great Bear is a Bolliger & Mabillard inverted roller coaster. It’s a little different than many B&M inverts in that the layout wanders around instead of staying in one general area. The layout takes riders close to water, near trees, and over adjacent rides. It’s a lot more scenic than your average “plopped into a giant field” B&M.

Ride Review: Great Bear (Hersheypark)

SwingerEvery June is the Corpus Christi Parish Carnival in the hills of Chatham, NJ. Location-wise, it’s the second closest event to my locale. It’s just a quick drive up the hill. So close, that my zeppolies won’t even get cold by the time I get back to my place!

The fair took place from June 6th to June 8th.  Unfortunately, the event got the shaft from mother nature as the remnants of tropical storm Andrea dumped heavy rains from Thursday night into Saturday morning; two of the three days. Fortunately, the final day turned out to be pretty nice so I headed over at around 8pm. Tommy’s Midway (they have a site now!) had the spot once again and the fair had:

OLP FairThere’s three major events in New Providence, NJ. The largest is arguably Our Lady of Peace’s annual fair. Man, I’ve probably been going to this fair for over 22 years now. It was kind of hard to miss since I went to OLP’s school in my younger years. When the fair would come around, I’d basically stare out the windows in class, watching the buildup instead of doing stuff like, you know, schoolwork. The fair spanned four days, from May 15 to the 18th and featured rides from Blue Sky Amusements. The ride lineup changed a bit from last year. The fair had:

StingerI’ve heard about this fair for a couple of years but never decided to go until this year. Actually, I almost missed it as I thought it was occurring towards the end of May as it did last year! Yep, despite doing a carnival list each year, I still forget when most of them occur.

I left for the fair just before 7pm and arrived at 7:30. It’s really not a long drive from my place, just an annoying one…and expensive thanks to the Goethals Bridge’s $10.25 toll! I then waited about 15 minutes to get an admission ticket ($5). The midway was done by Reithoffer Shows and had quite a few major rides:

FairHey, first carnival of 2013! This really shouldn’t be the first trip report of 2013, though, as Six Flags opened in March this year, but I ended up not getting down there as of yet. Anyway, I headed over to the Middlesex Fire Dept carnival on Saturday, April 27th and arrived at around 8:15pm. Campy’s Amusements was running the midway again this year and the fair featured:
