Trip Report: Wildwood 2010

Last week I was ‘down the shore’ (that’s Jersey speak) in Wildwood, Cape May, Atlantic City, Brick, Ocean City and Point Pleasant, hence the gap in updates recently. I’ll save you all from hearing the fun stories of getting sunburn at the beach, gambling away $50 bucks in AC, and being caught in a torrential downpour in Cape May and get right to the on topic amusement related things!

Wildwood, NJ has sort of had a dark ride resurgence this past year with the addition of three haunted attractions across the boardwalk. The most notable of which is Morey’s Piers’ walk through ride Ghost Ship which took the place of the old golf course on Mariner’s Landing pier. The second haunted attraction is Horror City 3D, a revamp of Zombie World with the most notable difference being the removal of Zombie World’s track, turning it into a walk through. Finally, Sportland Pier, a sparsely populated amusement pier in North Wildwood, saw the addition of House of Haunts which took over the former arcade building. The ride didn’t seem to be open just yet but they did have an electric chair ‘ride’ where people pay three bucks to be ‘electrocuted.’ They also have a website up!

This year was the first that I did not get a wristband for Morey’s Piers, I don’t know, I just didn’t feel it this year after many years of riding the same rides. However my sister and I did get some tickets to go on Ghost Ship and Great White, Morey’s Piers’ wooden coaster. Ghost Ship was an incredible 12 tickets, translating to about $11.40……….! Wow, this one better be good!

The outside of the ride looks much like its namesake, an old, dilapidated ship with a skull-like appearance to the ship’s bow. The boat’s name is Ignus Fatuus, or Foolish Fire in Latin. The name is actually another term for Will-o’ the-Wisp which are those strange balls of light seen in swamps. Another definition of Ignus Fatuus is “something that misleads or deludes.” The outside features a large queue line which was indeed completely filled on some nights.

Upon entering, riders walk left, down a hallway and to the ticket scanner and waiting area. Riders wait until the attendant says they can go in, at which point a short movie will play telling of the boat’s dilemma, something to do with a radioactive spill aboard the ship. Afterwards, riders walk through various scenes of toxic havoc, malfunctioning machinery and about 15 or 20 inhabitants of the boat…who don’t take kindly to the non-irradiated. That’s all I’ll say here about the ride as to not ruin it for potential riders. I might post a ride review later on, once the ride has settled in a bit. It was a fine walkthrough attraction however; it had a lot of neat props and it pretty long as well!

The other ride we went on was Great White, the CCI built hybrid wooden coaster. This one was 8 tickets, which is pretty standard for a large coaster I guess. We rode in the back seat at night which translated to quite a bit of airtime along with a great wooden battering since this coaster isn’t exactly smooth. I made it a point to not hold on at all which resulted in being ragdolled around the seat and into my sister on occasion. Hell, it was my one ride on it this season, I may as well be reckless!

Some other notes about the boardwalk was that the large sky tower structure on Adventure Pier has finally been removed. The tower was left over from the pier’s days as Fun Pier before Morey’s bought the property. No real loss other than the remnant of Wildwood past it signified. Also on Adventure Pier, the Chance Inverter has been taken out. Again, not much of a loss.

Over at Surfside Pier, Condor seemed to have been closed for much of the week I was down. I saw it running once on Monday night but that was it. I’ve been hearing over at Mr. Boardwalk that Condor had a break down one night which nearly resulted in a rope rescue for people stuck on the ride. Not pertaining to amusements, I noticed that the ‘fad’ this year at the boardwalk stores are these stupid ball clackers that use a string. Also, ‘Free Hugs’ shirts and ‘Come at me bro!’ shirts were popular…blah, blah and more blah.

Bonus Trip Report: Some Fair in Brick!

So I went to get some pizza one night while at my families’ shore house and noticed a sign for a fair somewhere in Brick Twp. All right! So I ate and then headed off to the fair. Upon arriving I saw a racked Octopus in a small parking lot. Ok, what the hell is this? Did I miss the fair? Nah, it was just a leftover. The real fair was across the street, set back a little. The fair was basically the same as the St. Philomena’s carnival in Livingston last year, with Campy’s Amusements running the show. Rides included Scat, Gravitron, Scrambler, Bumper Cars, Ferris Wheel, Slide and some kiddie rides.

Well it’s unofficially official now. While Six Flags has not put out a press release as of yet, the plans for a new coaster were reviewed recently at a Jackson Township planning board meeting. The plans called for a steel roller coaster to be erected on Great American Scream Machine’s old spot with the lift hill and outer portions of the coaster extending into the parking area next to Superman: Ultimate Flight. As a result 205 parking spaces will be axed reducing the number of total spaces to 9,061 (fun fact!) Also noted is that GASM’s station will not be demolished in preparation for the new coaster, most likely to be reused.

The Jackson Online website also included a photo of the proposed layout…it sure looks a lot like Chang!

Proposed coaster for Six Flags Great Adventure

Chang at Kentucky Kingdom

Wow, it’s August already! I can’t believe it; it feels like it was just yesterday when I was compiling the list of NJ and surrounding fairs in 2010! There’s still plenty of amusement park and carnival happenings to be had however, why just tomorrow I’ll be heading to a fair in western NJ and then up to the New Jersey State Fair on Friday! Trip reports will undoubtedly follow, but in the meantime I’ve been sitting on these waterpark videos for a little bit now and since we’re upon the dog days of summer, what better time to share these tasty lynx (or just videos) full of win!

Exhibit A: The Worlds Longest Waterslide

World’s longest coaster? Yeah we know all about that; Steel Dragon 2000, eight thousand blah blah, blah blah, blah.  But have you ever seen the world’s longest waterslide? It resides in Northern Guancaste, Costa Rica and it’s approximately 1,312 feet long! Not only is it long, but riders also have to wear a helmet while on their journey; nothing says you’re in for a wild slide like preparing for potential head injury!

Exhibit B: The Extreme Waterslide

Maybe this isn’t extreme in the sense that it’s terrifyingly high or fast but I’d be damned if this would fly in the US due to safety concerns. I’m not exactly sure what happens towards the beginning of this slide, but all that matters is that it rounds a sharp, angled turn into a steep drop. The fact that riders go into said turn at a pretty good clip guarantees for some wild ragdolling of the body. Make sure to check out the third rider’s run!

Exhibit C: Dumb Waterslide Antics

And here we go, breaking rules for our viewing pleasure! First off, have you ever thought about riding a plastic chair down a waterslide? Me neither!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzVqflhLEoE

Next we have this hotshot who does a little trick while going down the hill. This would certainly get someone booted out of a US waterpark in record time…

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYS8sha1YVI

Who needs water to enjoy a waterslide? Just ride down it on a street luge cart! (Nice uh…landing zone by the way…..)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNRKxcYG7R8

“Thank you sir, may I have another?” (Uh, and did they really think this was a good idea judging by the type of slide and the fact that there’s a damn fence at the end?)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmppA5rbkys

And finally we have some guy nearly plunging to his doom on a steep waterslide! Boy that slide looks like fun doesn’t it?!

  • Event: State Fair Meadowlands
  • Where: Meadowlands Sports Complex; East Rutherford, NJ
  • Date: 6/30/2010
  • Primary Ride Op: Amusements of America

There was a time when the State Fair Meadowlands, or just Meadowlands Fair, was the biggest most mind blowing fair I’d attend each year. Can’t really say that for recent years however with the fair committee booking less and less each year it seems. This year was unfortunately the worst I can remember in terms of rides…I mean it was still a fun fair, but considering past years have had some real great line ups, it was a bit of a let down. The fair had…

  • Space Roller (owned by Floyd & Baxter)
  • Crazy Mouse
  • Avalanche
  • Fireball (KMG)
  • Bonsai
  • Rock n’ Roll
  • Trapeze (Chance Yo-yo)
  • Orbiter
  • Giant Wheel
  • Scooters
  • Ring of Fire
  • Tomb of Doom (a dark ride)
  • Some POS spinny ride
  • Multiple fun houses
  • a myriad of kiddie rides
  • Several freak shows
  • A load of games
  • Various vendors
  • A bunch of shows
  • Truckloads of greasy treats

I went with two of my cousins who live near the Meadowlands. I had ordered my tickets ahead of time so I went to the will call booth to pick them up and headed in. I think the tickets were a few bucks off as opposed to getting them at the door. The first thing I saw when I walked in was a booth screaming “Virgil WWE Superstar” with none other than WWE’s Virgil manning the table. A few people were walking up to him but I’d bet the booth would see more action if The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, Virgil’s kayfabe boss from the 80s, was sitting at the table! At least it wasn’t this bad for ol’ Virgil…

Anyway the first ride we went on were the Scooters. They were your standard, lapbar clad Majestic scooters. When the ride started I had my foot firmly pressed on the ‘gas’ pedal expecting a nice burst of speed straight into one of my cousins’ cars; unfortunately the car only puttered into their car at a half a MPH maybe. I tried to gain some speed by breaking away from the mish mosh of cars but got only to walking speed or so. Bah, what’s up with bumper cars these days?

Next up was Space Roller which had a one cycle wait. This year they ran the ride on a fairly respectable cycle compared to last year when the fair was mobbed and the ride had a disgusting line. As always the ride was absolutely awesome with all the random flips and  ‘OMG’ moments. Afterwards we took a spin on Trapeze, a Chance Yo-yo. I never remember how steep the chairs tilted until I took this ride on this one, I almost got crotched on the strap that secures the lapbar…fun.

After the Yo-yo we went over to Crazy Mouse which had like no wait which was in stark contrast to last year’s hour or so wait! It wasn’t too bad but these Crazy Mouse rides are popping up so much now that they’re kind of losing their luster…but the GP probably eats them up.

We decided to hit the next coaster, Avalanche, afterwards since it would probably have a long line later on. The line was only 8 or so carloads long but it moved slower than snot (that moves slow right?) Avalanche is an SDC made Galaxi coaster which is really similar to a Pinfari Zyklon with the only real difference being a little side to side track section towards the end. It sounds fun, but it was kind of bumpy and those GD brakes at the end stopped on a dime. Worth a 10 minute wait but not worth the 50 hour wait last year.

Next we hopped on Tomb of Doom, a smallish dark ride that tried its best to be scary. The ride did have a few buzzers and sirens which provided some cheap scares but the props themselves were either not lit enough or just kind of crumby looking. I mean I’m not expecting Haunted Mansion at a fair but a Bill Tracy-esque dark ride would be the lick!

At this point we decided to grab some food and watch a couple of shows. I got a chicken fingers basket and a coke which came to like $10 or so. The chicken fingers weren’t too great but it did come with a mound of tasty fries. We ate while watching a BMX stunt show. I was kind of hoping for some wicked spills but alas, it just wasn’t to be. Still a cool show and one dude even did a front flip on his bike! Doesn’t that defy physics or something? Next we checked out a circus that had the standard jugglers, clowns, motorcycle dude riding in a sphere. Although it did have a boxing kangaroo which was totally the shit!

Ok, back to the rides. Orbiter was probably the first stop which provided a short ride but with no line I couldn’t really complain. I tried to take an on ride video with my digital camera but it didn’t turn out that great. Next was Rock n’ Roll, a Bertazzon Matterhorn ride themed to rock and roll I guess. Slapping 50s era cars onto the flash as well as modeling the ride vehicles after them constitutes early rock and roll I presume. Anyway the ride went backwards first then forwards in an odd decision by the ride ops. The ride also played heavy metal which completely undermined the whole rock and roll, Elvis, Chevy theme. One of my cousins then jumped on Fireball with me while the other sat it out. Fireball was OK, but my nausea tolerance to them is really going downhill.

We decided to ride the Giant Wheel next in which we were forced to ride with a bunch of others as they only loaded ten or so cars. I hate when they do that! The wheel has like 20 cars, you can fill them ya’ know! Finally, with me left as the only one able to ride without getting sick, I took a spin on Space Roller again and ended it with a front seat ride on Bonsai, which for some reason was tucked into the kiddie section. Considering that pendulum rides always get to me a bit nauseous, and with me already a bit woozy, Bonsai capped off the night for me. We left at around 11pm or so. The crowd level was great but I’m hoping the ride selection is a bit better next year!

After 21 years in operation, Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure closed for good on July 18th, 2010. The coaster will be replaced by a new attraction in 2011, believed to be Chang from Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom however nothing has been officially announced as of yet. When Scream Machine first opened in 1989 it was undoubtedly the most badass coaster in the area; unfortunately with newer coasters being smoother and less jarring, Scream Machine was relegated to “old rough coaster” status by the general public and even by some coaster aficionados.

The following video is a tribute to this coaster that was loved by the masters of defensive riding and loathed by the virtual rag dolls!
