Trip Report: OLP Fair 2011

The Our Lady of Peace parish carnival runs for four days each year in mid May. At one time it was three days but a forth was added possibly because each year there is one throwaway day which is marred by rain or storms; this year was no different as the first day consisted of an all day rain event followed by two fairly brisk days before finally getting a warm, dry day to close out the fair. Blue Sky Amusements provided the rides and some games for the X year in a row now (lost count!) The fair had…

  • Zipper
  • Himalaya (Wisdom)
  • Starship Gravitron
  • Riptide (ARM Ali Baba)
  • Round Up
  • Big Wheel
  • Swinger
  • Scooters
  • Sizzler
  • Berry Go Round
  • Fun Slide
  • A bunch of kiddie rides
  • A myriad of games
  • A selection of greasy treats
  • A few vendors

Zipper sported a massive line on Friday and Saturday night, partly because it was the only inverting ride at the fair and partly because it loads pretty darn slowly. Next door was a Watkins Swinger, a pretty run of the mill swing ride that can rack small enough for practically a sedan to pull it. It ran pretty fast compared to most swing rides I’ve seen lately; it was also the fastest to start tearing down soon after 11pm on Sat.

On the other side of Zipper was a Wisdom Himalaya which is a big step up from a Venture Mini Himalaya but not as impressive as a Musik Express or other full sized Himis; of course a full sized version A. racks on more than one trailer and B. is just freaking big. Scooters was the next ride over; not much to say about them other than that you got a nice waft of grease or whatever the heck that smell is when near them.

A Hrubetz Round Up decked out with LEDs along with the old tube lights sat beside Scooters. It’s one of the better looking Hrubetz Round Up rides around as well as one of the best run, rising up to a very steep angle, something that a lot of Round Up rides don’t do. Here’s a video of the Round-Up, it was actually taken last year but just recently edited.

Next to Round Up was another centrifuge based ride, Starship Gravitron, a brand new Wisdom Starship 2000. This was actually the ride I was most looking forward to seeing after reading a post about it on Matt’s Carnival Warehouse. The ride was fully souped-up with LEDs set to wildly flashing sequences and an electric orange ship with some glitter thrown in. It’s one of the best Starship 2000 rides I’ve seen, right up there with Reithoffer’s “Starship 2000” and Morey’s Piers’ “Cygnus X-1.” A video of the ride can be found in a previous post.

A Wisdom Sizzler was next on the midway. It seemed a bit darker this year with some of the lights not turned on or something, I can’t really place my finger on it. It did run really fast compared to other Sizzler rides however; the sweeps holding the cars actually spun faster than the main boom. Riptide, an ARM Ali Baba with a better theme, anchored the back right side of the midway. The ‘Rip’ in Riptide was not working on the days I went which resulted in hearing “let’s go on the Tide!” more than once from random carnival patrons. Finally, a medium sized gondola wheel sat near the front of the midway which sort of served as a backdrop for the row of games set up closest to the school.

Video: Starship Gravitron

Here’s a short…well, really short (it’s a Gravitron for crying out loud, how long can I make it?!) of Starship Gravitron, a brand new Wisdom manufactured Starship 2000 owned by Blue Sky Amusements. It’s ridiculously nice looking with wildly flashing LED lights and a cool electric orange ship; even the name is great, keeping ‘Gravitron’ in there while omitting the cheesy ‘2000.’ This video was taken at the 2011 Our Lady of Peace Fair in New Providence, NJ. Song is ‘Around the World (Kid Dub Remix)’

It ain't GASM

With the theme park season underway, I decided to head down to Great Adventure on Monday, April 18th, to not only get on a few rides but to redeem my season pass as well. I got to the park at around 3:30pm in attempt to avoid the crowds, it kind of worked; the lines were still too long for my tastes when I arrived but an hour in and they would die down significantly.

Green Lantern, scheduled to open on May 25th, loomed over the parking lot in a similar way that Great American Scream Machine did for 21 years prior…however GASM was much more imposing I think. I entered the park and immediately headed for season pass processing. I heard that opening day saw massive lines at the season pass processing area, evident by the maze of temporary rope queues; luckily I only had to wait a few minutes when I went.

They now have seals instead of tigers

Afterwards I walked around the park, checking out what was improved or added along with looking at ride waits. As always I took the path through The Boardwalk into Golden Kingdom. I skipped checking Kingda Ka’s line and headed for El Toro…only to find that the connecting path was closed for Funstruction! They’re building some addition to Golden Kingdom with more animal exhibits and such, don’t know when it’ll be finished though.

I took the long detour to El Toro which was running one train and had a line backed up into the second set of switchbacks; Bizarro also had a line spilling into the second switchback area; Rolling Thunder had a stairway wait for the right track which is still too long of a line since, like El Toro, it also had one train running…actually it’s worse since RT loads at a sloth-like pace. Runaway train even had a bit of a line! Come on!

I went to the other side of the park: Nitro had an OK line with two trains running; Batman, on the other hand, had a line extending out of the building with ONE TRAIN RUNNING. That is not a wait I’d like to take part in. I didn’t see a line for Skull Mountain after peering through the cutouts in the building, but I still could have been trapped by a wait just around the corner.

After walking around a bit more, I found myself back at Bizarro and decided to just wait. Bizarro was running two trains with the wait being about 20 minutes. Bizarro itself was fun as always with the fire and sound working. I did notice that the auger prop was removed from the corkscrews however.

Next I  went to El Toro which was now running two trains; the wait was maybe 10-15 minutes. A guy got into the row with me along with his wife and kid in the seats ahead of us. As the train swiftly ascended the lift, they noted in surprise that it was “faster than other wooden coasters.” They obviously hadn’t been on this ride before and I knew they were in for a ride unlike any woodie. As the train went down the drop, the guy next to me raised his hands and then immediately grasped the handle bar as the train continued to pitch downward to its final 76 degree angle. By the end of the ride the kid in front of me was grasping the handlebar, frozen in shock before noting that this was his first wooden coaster. Baptism by fire anyone?

I headed over to the other side of the park once again and hopped on Skull Mountain, which had basically no wait at all. I took a ride in the back seat with a pretty fair sized clearance between the lapbar and myself resulting in me nearly landing in the seat next to me during the drop. Next I got in line for Nitro which had a wait starting at that in-line snack shack that’s barely used. I sat in the second to last row as the last row had bit of a line. I always forget how much airtime Nitro has after the long off-seasons; it’s not El Toro ejector air, but there’s some serious floater air going over all the hills!

Afterwards I got in line for Batman, which line had died down significantly from before. They were still running one train and the wait turned out to be maybe 10 minutes; it also helped that I jumped into an open seat when I saw the opportunity, shaving off one cycle to the wait. I’m not sure if all Batmans ride like Great Adventure’s but its gotten a bit rough over the years. It’s not nearly as bad as some loopers, but for a B&M it’s sort of rattly.

I ended the trip with a ride on the Big Wheel, and got shuffled into a car with a father and his young daughter. That’s better than being in a car with a bunch of  annoying teens but still, there’s 36 cars and pretty much no line, can’t I get my own car? Nonetheless the view was nice with the trees not yet in full bloom, giving a clearer view of the park. I left the park at around 7:30pm (park closed at 8pm that night.)

Seems like Green Lantern, Six Flags Great Adventure’s newest addition, is coming along fairly nicely. I’m not too sure if it’ll be ready for the April 9th opening day (actually I’d be blown away) but you never know (Update: read below) Anyway here’s some construction pictures from the Birdsall Services Group Facebook page:

Green Lantern Opening: Green Lantern will be opening to the public on May 25th. However, season passholders will be able to ride it from May 19-22; you just have too show your processed season pass at the entrance to Green Lantern on those dates to ride.

Six Flags has also made a few other updates to the park along with the addition of Green Lantern, namely repainting the cars on the Sky Way and rethemeing Fantasy Fling into Tornado. Here’s a couple of pictures from the Great Adventure Facebook Page.

Funtown Pier

Seaside NJ’s Funtown Pier is also getting in on the action this season by adding two new rides,  Thaiphoon, a Zamperla Mini Discovery, and a Huss Top Spin. Only a few years ago Funtown Pier was slated for the chopping block, now they’re adding two major rides in a pretty good attempt to compete with nearby Casino Pier; I don’t know what’s going on anymore!

Here’s a couple of pics of the racked Top Spin on 4/19:

It’s that time of the year again! Here’s a list of medium to large fairs and carnivals in and around New Jersey for 2011. If you know about a medium to large carnival (ie. with adult thrill rides and not just kiddie rides/inflatable attractions) that isn’t listed here that’s within the area, please drop a comment about it and I’ll try to add it. This list will be updated throughout the spring and summer, so make sure to check back!
